First and Last

We have a wood-burning fireplace in our apartment. Fun, right? We thought so. Ben bought a decent amount of firewood for a good price and we had our first fire a couple nights ago. First of all, it was pretty impossible to get the fire lit. We tried newspaper, but it didn't get hot enough to catch the wood on fire. Then Ben bought a box of Duraflame fat wood (kindling) and those burned really well, but the logs still didn't really catch fire and stay burning. Once the kindling was burned, the fire died down. Finally, he bought some starter fluid that did nothing but burn right off. AND...the smoke didn't get into the apartment, but that doesn't mean the odor didn't. Our apartment smelled like a campground after all of that. So...we had our first and our last fire in the wood-burning fireplace. Whenever we have a house, we definitely want a gas fireplace!

Was the wood seasoned? Was it split down? Sorry that didn't work out. It looked nice though.

At least it was pretty. There's something hypnotic about watching the flames.

I could come teach Ben how to start a fire. ;) J/K. Maybe that is why the wood was sold so cheap - because it's hard to light. Maybe you should try a different kind of wood next time and see if it makes a difference. Well that is, if there IS a next time. :)
